Centra Case Study

Weekend call was being covered internally, but post-call recovery time made it increasingly difficult to keep up with outpatient demand. To reduce pressure on employed cardiologists and return more physician time to clinic, Centra implemented a Call Relief Program:
    • Consistent weekend coverage across the full year (52 weekends)
    • Dedicated Moonlighting Solutions cardiologists providing scheduled support
    • Integrated coverage alongside the Centra care team

A Clear Return on Access and Capacity

By reducing weekend burden:

    • Physicians returned to clinic instead needing time off post-call
    • New patient access expanded
    • Downstream imaging and procedures increased
    • Costly physician turnover was avoided
This created a model that supported both access and financial performance.

Built for Stability

This model worked because it reduced internal weekend call pressure while protecting physician time for outpatient care. Consistent coverage supported continuity within the existing program and aligned with how cardiology practices actually operate, allowing the model to function reliably over time.

Call Was the Breaking Point

Weekend call volume was high and continuing to grow, while post-call recovery time pulled physicians out of clinic and reduced access. As subspecialists exited the noninvasive call schedule, the burden shifted to a smaller group of cardiologists, intensifying workload, and elevating the risk of burnout and turnover.

What Changed

Centra’s cardiovascular program stabilized call schedules and reduced variability in coverage, improving physician satisfaction and retention. It also strengthened recruitment in a competitive market while establishing a more sustainable, long-term coverage model.

Designed to Scale

Centra is now expanding this approach beyond its initial implementation in cardiology and exploring use in additional specialties. This positions the Call Relief Program™ as part of a broader, long-term workforce strategy.
