Frequently Asked Questions by Physicians
How soon can I start moonlighting?
Most of our positions require that you have hospital privileges. It can take anywhere from 30 to 90 days for privileges to be issued (this time can be longer if a license application is pending.) A large portion of the timing is determined by the hospital’s bylaws, however the rest depends on how quickly you return and submit your paperwork to us. The faster your file is completed, the sooner you will start work. We have a fully-staffed NAMSS certified Credentialing Department that will walk you through each step of the application process.
What types of facilities do you contract with?
We contract with any facility that employs physicians, from small solo single specialty providers to large multi-specialty groups and hospitals. We also work with many national hospitalist groups as well as tele-medicine companies. We provide coverage at both inpatient and outpatient sites.
What licenses do I need to moonlight?
All opportunities require that you hold a full unrestricted license to practice medicine in the state where you provide coverage whether it be on site or for a telemedicine opportunity.
Do I need my own DEA?
You will need a full federal DEA certificate for individual use. The DEA must have an address for each state where you will be working. If the state where you will be working issues a state controlled substance certificate, then the state registration is also required.
Does Moonlighting Solutions provide malpractice insurance with tail coverage?
Yes, Moonlighting Solutions provides malpractice insurance at no cost to you. We provide a claims made policy with tail coverage. We have a roster policy, therefore as a long as our company offers malpractice insurance you remain on the roster (even if you are no longer working) and are covered. In the event that we would no longer provide malpractice insurance, we would purchase tail insurance at that time for the entire roster. We guarantee a minimum of 3 years of tail coverage for all moonlighting physicians.
Will Moonlighting Solutions withhold taxes from my pay?
No. Moonlighters are independent contractors. All moonlighting physicians are paid on a 1099 basis.
When do you pay your moonlighters?
All of our moonlighters get paid every other Friday, regardless of when we receive payment. The vast majority of our customers pay us in a timely manner but you don’t have to worry about that. Once you complete your shift, you submit an invoice to us for payment.
Do you help with the credentialing process?
Yes, we assist with entire credentialing process. Once your paperwork is submitted to Moonlighting Solutions, we will assist with the hospital application process including completion of applications and submission of your application to the facility. We will also follow up with the hospital to be sure that the required verifications are coming in as quickly as possible. We work with you to lighten the paperwork burden.
How are shifts scheduled?
Moonlighting Solutions does not assign shifts. As an independent contractor, your schedule is set based on your availability. Once assigned to a team and credentialed at the hospital, you will be contacted by a designated Moonlighting Solutions Account Manager for your site on a monthly basis regarding your availability for shifts that are 1 to 3 months in advance.
How is working with Moonlighting Solutions different than a Locums Tenens firm?
We provide our clients with long-term part-time help which translates into long-term quality opportunities for you. By working with the same client over a long period of time, you become familiar with the staff, the site and the patients. The client sees you as a valued part of their team.
